D. Maria II (1819-1853)

Maria II was born in Rio de Janeiro, daughter of D. Pedro IV and was queen of Portugal twice. She reigned in one of the most troubled periods of the history of Portugal, the civil war between liberals and absolutists. With she was only 7 years old, her father, abdicates the throne of Portugal in her favor, years after declaring the independence of Brazil. D. Maria II was to marry her uncle D. Miguel, but his ambitions led him to usurp her right to the throne, which eventually dragged the country into a civil war. When she was 15 D. Maria II finally takes over the government of Portugal. She got married twice and had 11 children. She was known for being a very affectionate mother, having been nicknamed “The Good Mother” and “The Educator.”
